MUSEUM ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK

Strategic Plan for 2005-2009

Approved by the Board of Directors: April 24, 2005

Introduction: With its Strategic Plan for 2005-2009, the Museum Association of New York sets forth its agenda and aspirations for the next five years. Recognizing the significance of New York's museums, this plan looks not only to the present, but also to the future, responding to members’ needs while simultaneously addressing the needs of the museum field as a whole. In creating this plan, MANY recognizes not only the strength and diversity of New York's museum community but also its unique role within that community.

This plan is composed of four parts: Introduction, Challenge & Opportunities for New York State’s Museums, Challenges & Opportunities for MANY, Goals & Strategies for FY2005-2009.

In implementing this plan, the Board of Directors and staff will work to meet the goals outlined here, using it annually to create a work plan and a budget. MANY began its planning process in the summer of 2004. With support from the New York State Council on the Arts, it hired consultant Joan Baldwin to assess current programs and draft a new five-year plan for program/service development. Ms. Baldwin, in consultation with MANY director Anne Ackerson, prepared a written survey, assessing the effectiveness of MANY’s 2000-2004 programmatic and organizational goals.

The surveys returned provide a window on areas of interest and concern for MANY members throughout New York State. In addition to the survey, Ms. Baldwin and Ms. Ackerson led several regional focus groups during the summer of 2004. These small, informal discussions enhanced the survey data. The first draft of the plan was circulated to the board prior to its January 10, 2005 meeting.

Vision

The Museum Association of New York is the key strategic resource for the New York state museum community.

Mission

The Museum Association of New York provides an information, advocacy and professional standards network that serves and strengthens New York State’s diverse museum community and enables its museums to fulfill their missions.
