Job Title: Curatorial Assistant

About the Institution:
The Strong owns and cares for the world’s most comprehensive collection of toys, dolls, board games, video games, books, documents, and other historical materials related to play. The curatorial assistant supports that process with cataloging and storage of new additions to more than 300,000 objects in the museum’s collection and participates in administrative tasks related to collections and exhibits projects. The incumbent has the opportunity to participate in training to become a curatorial professional.
This position requires an organized, diligent, and energetic professional with excellent research and writing skills, experience cataloging, and the ability to learn and understand the museum’s collection.
Job Description:
Essential Duties:
- Perform work in accordance with best practices and standards, particularly AAM’s Code of Ethics for Museums.
- Research collections and keep abreast of current developments in the museum field and specific subject areas.
- Catalog incoming acquisitions (both physical artifacts and digital items, such as video games and photos) in the collection management database and relocate objects for storage.
- Together with the curators and conservator, examine objects to determine conservation needs, establish priorities, and arrange for necessary conservation work.
- Provide administrative and practical support for projects related to collections and exhibitions, as directed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, humanities, or related field.
- Ability to learn and understand the museum’s collection.
- Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in exhibitions, staff, and guest experiences.
- Experience in artifact cataloging, object handling, and collection management.
- Highly developed writing and proofreading skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain a high level of accuracy.
- Skilled in establishing priorities, coordinating multiple complex projects simultaneously, and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a small operating team and larger project teams.
- High degree of comfort and proficiency with computer technology and software, especially Microsoft Office and collection management programs.
These qualifications are considered a plus:
Professional experience at a museum or historical institution.
Knowledge of exhibit preparation procedures.
Must consent to and pass a drug screen and background check as conditions of employment.
